Guidelines for Dealing with the Weakness Question in Interviews

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

One strategy that lends itself to job interview for technical posts is the display to and tell tactic. In this article we will go through how you could use this specific strategy in your own interview

In essence, this strategy is born out of the fact that most interview panel members are more influenced by demonstrations of skills than declarations of skills. So, you would be better off using an example via which you can sell the idea that you possess various skills than simply stating “I have good time management skills” or phrases like that

Should the opportunity arise, you should be prepared to show the job interview panel an example of your work to back up the notion that you have the skill set necessary to excel at the job. In order to do this you need to be able to

1. Get them to ask You for Your Work

2. Produce Your Project

To get them to ask for your work, consider using some of the following words to create your opportunity:

  • If you’re interested I could show you…
  • If you wanted to know more, I have the (report) with me right here…
  • If it would be appropriate, you could have a look at…
  • I have a written precis of the project here, if you wanted to see it…
  • If it would help…

You also need to be able to display your work at the job interview. In order to do this, pick out one or two projects that you could use for this strategy. Choose the projects that

  • have work already in a written or electronic form
  • which sell the most amount of skills, which are relevant for the post that you are being interviewed for
  • with a high probablity of usage for your job interview

Be ready to react to the questions that will naturally come from the job interview panel, when they scan this report for the first time. Remember, that the points that they bring up when they meet your work “cold” are probably going to be different to those that you expect. You might want to ask a family member to go over your work and suggest what a “first timer” might ask you.

If you can, be prepared to leave the job interview panel with a physical copy of your work. It will form a tactile and visible reminder of you when they are reviewing the performances of all of the interviewees

The Father Of Virtual Real Estate Investing Comments On His Industry

Saturday, December 20th, 2008

Virtual Real Estate Investing” is a relatively new concept. There are many variations on what this term means, encompassing everything from using the internet to aid in real estate investing efforts to participating in online games such as SecondLife.

To find out the real story, I had a conversation with Bryan Ellis, widely considered to be one of the originators of the concept of Virtual Real Estate Investing.

When I began using the term virtual real estate investing in the late 1990s, I did so because I saw clear parallels between the strategies used for profiting from physical real estate and those that would create income in the online world, said Ellis.

An example of the similar nature of “virtual” and “physical” real estate Bryan Ellis likes to point out is the methods of making a profit from domain names compared to physical real estate. He points out that control of a domain name or even a specific web page is much like controlling a real estate property ” those assets can be monetized in similar ways: By selling them for a profit, by leasing them, by offering advertising, etc.

The parallels really are obvious. For example, if you’re the owner of a desirable property, its desirability is (in a business context) largely due to its being in a location that is of interest to others. Likewise, if you own a desirable domain name, others will find value in it because it serves their purposes. So it doesn’t matter if you own physical real estate or virtual real estate – you’ll likely use similar strategies to turn them into money in your pocket.

In our next installment of this series on virtual real estate investing., Bryan Ellis will share the internet analogies to the physical concept of real estate development.

I Chose the Italian Leather Sofa

Sunday, October 26th, 2008

When my mother told my fiance and I that her gift to us was new furniture for our new house we both nearly fainted. That was something that we really wanted and needed so we both about flipped when she told us. We had already been out looking so we knew what we wanted for the living room already. We chose a beautiful italian leather sofa and love seat set with matching coffee and end tables. The sofa not only looks great but it is so comfortable too. In fact I think that we are going to be getting another one for our den too.

My husband has great taste so when he told me that he had found us the perfect new sofa while he was on business in Europe I completely trusted him. When it arrived a few weeks later I about fell over with delight it was so beautiful. The italian leather sofa that he had purchased was so gorgeous that it looked more like a work of art than a piece of furniture. I told him that I thought I would have a hard time sitting on it actually. However that wasn’t an issue once I did sit on it because it just so happened to be as comfortable as it was beautiful.

Business Partnerships With Non Profit Organizations Are a Win-Win Proposition

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

The Republic of Tea company is partnering with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to raise funds for cancer research with the Sip for a Cure program.

The tea company created several specialty flavors of bag tea just for this campaign including grapefruit, pink rose, pink lady apple, and lemonade. Other products in the campaign include bottled tea and marmalade. A portion of the revenues from all Sip for the Cure products sold are donated directly to the Komen Foundation, with nothing to mail in and no response required from customers.

In the past few years The Komen Foundation has actively pursued
corporate partnerships in order to raise funds. The type of partnerships established by the Komen can be a good lesson for other businesses and non profit organizations.

A partnership program between a business and a non profit organization can be of benefit to both organizations. As in the case of The Republic of Tea, the tea company benefits by an increase in product sales with some positive PR in the process.

While the amount donated per item may be small, the volume of sales could add up to a large donation to the foundation. In fact, for 2005, The Republic of Tea has guaranteed a minimum donation of $50,000 to the Komen Foundation through the Sip for the Cure program. The company has a long term goal of $1 million in donations to the Komen Foundation and has contributed over $420,767 as of this August.

The Komen – Republic of Tea partnership demonstrates the power of corporate sponsorship programs. When non profit organizations partner with large companies with national distribution or outlets they can benefit from the volume of business that the company is already doing. The foundation receives additional advertising and exposure at no cost to them.

Partnership with smaller local or regional companies can have similar effects when the relationship between the two groups is stong and the program well designed and organized.

When planned well, corporate – non profit partnerships can be a great boost for both organizations, producing a win-win outcome.

A Simple Way To Set-Up A Successful Restaurant Business

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Are you trying to think of a good little business idea to make some serious cash?

Perhaps you’re tired of the job you’re in right now…

You want more money? More Freedom? Or perhaps just more Respect! Whatever the reason, what you’re reading right now is the solution! In-fact it could be the turning point of your life!

How do you fancy setting up and owning your own Restaurant, hell…How do you feel about owning 50 of them all at the same time!

Bare with me. All will be revealed I promise you, this is a great business idea, you will love this…
Imagine you’ve just come in from a hard day at work you’re too tired to cook… Your stomachs rumbling, you sit down and see this Ad in your local paper…

************************************
WE DELEVER
Chinese, Indian, Creek, Italian, Caribbean, Mexican..
Thai..etc In fact
WHATEVER FOOD YOU WANT!
We deliver
Have over 50 Menus.
Delivery charge 15%
(Minimum charge £2.50)
10:30 am- Midnight
Call now 08892828
****************************************

Tempting huh?

You think you could look past that Ad and settle for a mere Pizza?

Exactly!

Now imagine how many orders this one little-business must rake in each night?

Now add to this, the fact that these guys…

• Do not have to pay! Rent for a premises!
• Do not have to pay! Wages for an expensive kitchen/waiter staff!
• Do not have to pay! A penny to cover any costs to produce any of the food…

In fact the only thing they have to pay for is… petrol (Oh and phone calls!)

The Rest Is Pure Profit!

This simple little venture is so easy to set up that its unbelievable, and the profits you could make well…ill leave that up to your imagination!

Think about it… all you really need is; a telephone and some part-time minimum wage employees. To get going, you simply make deals with all the good restaurants in your town by offering to give them a lot of business providing you can buy their food at a substantial discount.

Then, when someone calls in an order to you, you make money on the food plus you make even more cash by adding on that 15% delivery charge.

This deal gives you all the benefits of owning a restaurant (actually of owning 50 restaurants) without any of the overhead.
I don’t know exactly who thought of this idea. But it’s pure Genius!

It’s easy to run and potentially very profitable. What more could you ask for?

Now the great thing about this business as stated in the headline is that it takes next to nothing to start off. Providing you have a phone to take orders, and to call the restaurants, a few friends/workers and necessary transport to deal with deliveries;

You Are In Business!

With this plan you can corner the food delivery market in your town. And the best thing about this plan is that all your local restaurants you’re dealing with will LOVE you for it!

Because they will be making a bundle as you grow. This means they will happily endorse your venture with the most powerful form of marketing “Word of mouth!” and hand out your fliers to all of their customers.

Now For Those Of You Who Are Serious.

Let’s say you put this plan into action tomorrow, you get your few workers together and you phone and make the arrangements with all the good restaurants and they all agree to your venture, then you put out the Ad in the local paper. And then you wait…

The orders start flying in by the dozen; things are really hectic! Cash is stacking up on the table like mini-mountains, and then after a about the first month…

The Honey Moons Over!

Your big-fish competition begins to notice the massive dip in their market share and more importantly to their profit margin, they start to look for a cause and then they see your Ad!

Now. they will probably be very peeved at this and will want to knock you out of business, –yes I’m starting to see it too, marketing is just like war!and the easiest way to knock a small chain out of business as you know, if you’re a large biz , is to go to a price that the small fish cant survive on and in essence starve you out of business!

Well. The good news is, that’s not going to happen to you, now that you know your business and more importantly know your competition, you can beat them!

By Hitting Them Before They Hit You!

In self defense circles we call this a “Pre-Emptive Strike!” Before they get a chance to copy your idea and cash in..You can do it first…

Yes. That’s right!
As soon as your first venture starts to take off send out another Ad just like the one you had before except under a new business name, and making a much better offer than the last Ad you ran before, maybe emphasizing, only a 5% lower delivery charge, or a 25% discount for students, or first order half price! Whatever it is, just make sure it’s a much better deal than your last business Ad!

• Now this is important. Make sure the two Ads run at the same Time… In the same publication!

The idea is to give the perception to your rivals that this niche is already crowded, that another company has already jumped in and undercut you before they could get a chance. That’s how it looks from their point of view, when in reality you will be the soul fish in that pool making an absolute killing from the profits!

By owning and running both the original business, and the very profitable knock-off version!

So what you waiting for.. The money is on the table. So pick it up!

Thanks for reading..
